Simulacra

The series takes its name from Jean Baudrillard's concept of the simulacrum — a copy so complete it replaces its original. It begins with things already at some remove from reality, the camera adds another layer — of distance, of representation, of meaning. Each image is a copy of a copy (of a copy), with the original several removes away.

But at each layer, something is added — intention, contradiction, wit. So the process isn't the degradation of the photocopier, it's transformation.

I know what each image means to me. I build them to withhold that meaning just enough that you have to bring your own. What you find in the gap between what's shown and what's withheld will be partly mine and partly yours.

That boundary is where I try to work.
